5. Origins
Area 51 was used for bombing and artillery practice during World War II and was abandoned after the war. It remained empty until 1955 when Lockheed Martin selected the isolated site as the ideal place to test the new U2 spy plane it was building for the U.S. government.
4. Security
The perimeter of the base is covered with ground sensors and listening devices to detect even the smallest intrusion. It is also heavily patrolled by armed guards from the Wackenhut Corporation, a very serious private security firm. These guys aren't your normal rent-a-cops that local concert promoters use. In short, they will kill you. End of story.
3. The Files
Reports suggest that many confidential files and data are dumped at Area 51. These files include UFO Confidential details, several financial issues and political issues. Witnesses say that these files can create havoc and lead to the downfall of USA Government and USA on a whole if made public. The computers here can create a chaos if accessed by a third party.
2. Oxcart Plane
When Area 51 was chosen as the testing site for the OXCART, a new, 8,500-foot runway had to be built. So as not to draw attention, contractors worked under cover of night. Flying at 2,200 mph, it took OXCART pilots 186 miles just to make a U-turn. To accommodate the plane, an additional 38,400 acres of land around the base had to be withdrawn from public access and the restricted airspace expanded to create a 440-square mile box.
1. Aurora plane Myth
The Aurora is a new kind of supersonic plane that allegedly flies out of Area 51. Its estimated cost: $15 billion! It runs on controlled explosions of cryogenic (real cold), methane or ammonia. Estimated speed: eight times the speed of sound, or around 6,000 miles per hour. The aerodynamics of the Aurora are reported to be very different from conventional aircrafts.
