5 Reasons why Offshore Drilling should be Allowed. Offshore oil drilling has been a prominent item in the news recently and after looking into this we actually found 5 really good reasons that convinced us that offshore oil drilling should be allowed. What do you think?
5. Tankers are a bigger threath
Between 1971 and 2000, tankers were responsible for 33% of the oil in our oceans, offshore facilities and pipelines were responsible for 2%… Oil is 16 times more likely to be spilled from a tanker than from a platform and if we don't use platforms, we need tankers!
4. It is Safe
In between the 2 major oil spills involving offshore platforms in 1971 and 2010 there have been no catastrophic oil spills from over 4000 U.S. platforms in U.S. waters. Nor have there been since 2010. Both of these disasters were caused by mismanagement. If the strict rules are being followed, then it can't really go wrong. from a tanker than from a platform and if we don't use platforms, we need tankers!
3. It's better for the environment
The countries from which we import oil have lower environmental standards than the U.S. In the U.S. methane is being captured and not released directly into the atmosphere like in Mexico, for example, which produces less than half the oil that the United States produces but emits six times as much methane.
2. Oil is being wasted
Shipping oil to the U.S. requires burning a huge amount of diesel oil, the exhaust from which is greenhouse gas pumped into the atmosphere. An oil tanker uses about 1-3 percent of the oil it carries just to get it to it's destination.
1. We NEED oil
We simply need oil. We will run out at some point, but off shore drilling is going to buy us more time to come up with alternatives that will keep our economy going.
