Television presenter Carol McGiffin has revealed that she was diagnosed with cancer last year.
The former member of ITV’s Loose Women show told the Sunday People she discovered a lump in her breast while on holiday in Malaysia last February.
The 54-year-old says she has now “got through it” after a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions.
Her Loose Woman co-star, the actress and presenter Lynda Bellingham, died in October of colon cancer.
Photographed in the paper with a shorn hairstyle, McGiffin said: “I don’t want to pretend any more. I kept it a secret because I didn’t want anyone feeling sorry for me.
“I feel it is over now and I’ve got I through it. I just want to be able to go out without my hat on and for people not to be bothered. I just want life to get back to normal.”
She appeared on Loose Women for 13 years before leaving in 2013.
She came fourth in Celebrity Big Brother in 2013 and completed her final course of radiotherapy in December.
McGiffin also said she was concerned about letting Bellingham know about her own illness.
“I thought it would be really unfair of me to tell Lynda about my situation. She was such an unselfish person, so she would have loved it if there was someone else to worry about.
“The last time I saw her was one of the handful of times I’ve worn my wig. I met up with some of the old Loose Women beforehand and we’d agreed not to tell her.”
However, McGiffin did tell her co-star of her own cancer diagnosis.
