As a big music lover, I just live for those songs that instantly jive and connect with you, and recently, for me, one of these songs has been J. Maurice’s latest track, ‘Favors’.
Now, I’d been keeping an eye on him for a few months already, having discovered him by accident on Spotify one day, and when I heard he’d just released a new tune, I didn’t quite know what to expect. I hit the ‘Play’ button blindly and was really pleasantly surprised by what I heard.
‘Favors’ is just such a raw song, you know? It might not be for everyone and if you’re not in the right frame of mind to hear it, you might not think it much, but the subject matter itself is pretty universal, and so, I think it’s a really attractive song. ‘Favors’ is about the people in your life who’ve used you, or maybe that’s too harsh of a word, not used you, just never really cared about you. The sad truth is we’ve all known people whom we’d give an arm and a leg for, whom we’ve supported through hard times, but when it was their turn to help us out, they fell short.
J. Maurice manages to capture the betrayal and the bitterness you feel at such times. He understands the anger that comes with seeing someone you care about treat you like dirt and he channels that into his latest song, a heavily auto-tuned track with excellent rhythm, that has you nodding your head along from the first lines.
He sings about fakers who’ve “taken my kindness for weakness” and you just know who in your life he means and you just want to scream this song into their face. It’s a very catchy tune, which I love, because it gives you the impression of an ‘easy-listen’, but in fact sends out a really powerful message.
Another thing that strikes me about ‘Favors’ is that it’s rising, slowly. As the song progresses, you feel both your anger and your self-confidence grow and the melodic rhythm accentuates this feeling, like Maurice is there for you every step of the way.
Lastly, one of my favorite parts is somewhere around the mid-point of the song, where J. Maurice sings “Look,I gotta go”, again and again. There is something so decisive about this lyric, something so final that fits so well with the subject at hand. It perfectly encapsulates what it’s like to be betrayed by someone you care about.
Complete with compelling artwork, J. Maurice’s latest single is definitely one that stays with you and helps you through hard times.
