“A Gogol Bordello-esque gypsy folk bounce” SHOUT4MUSIC
Introducing Dan Shears & The Velveteen Orkestra who will release their debut single ‘Dressed Up in Sables’ on 8th July through Strawbychka Recordings via Genepool. The single is taken from their first and Pledge funded album, ‘Shadow & Whimsy’, which will be released in early 2017. Dan Shears has an incredibly wide vocal range with a gorgeous poetic quality, combined with an engaging, sharp wit and cockney charm. His voice evokes memories of artists as diverse as Nick Cave, Morrissey, Frankie Valli and Roy Orbison amongst others. The band is set to make an indelible mark on the British music scene.
‘Dressed Up In Sables’ is a hard hitting indie-folk anthem about mania and depression, and the blurred lines between the two. The song is laden with juxtaposed imagery in the style of a gothic novel. With a touch of post-punk venom and snarl, but also the swagger and imagination of a melodramatic musical theatre number, this is a brave debut from South East London born songwriter Dan Shears and his band of merry men and women.
While weaving tales of love, heartache and fantasy and with their intensely dark and ethereal style, Dan Shears & The Velveteen Orkestra are proving themselves to be one of London’s most interesting and captivating bands, both live and on record. Beautiful, flowing vocal melodies with lyrics that bring to mind carnivalesque lullabies, written by a much older soul, cascade over brooding and intricate guitar work. Complimented by soaring vocal harmonies, and a surging ocean of pounding guitars and orchestral sound, their songs are so immersed in passion and pathos that they’re sure to haunt the memory long after the first listen.
Dan was inspired by his love of the dark and fantastical writing of authors such as Angela Carter and Franz Kafka, and the mood and imagery created by film directors such as Stanley Kubrick and Tim Burton. This is infused with his admiration for artists like Jeff Buckley and The Smiths and folk music from around Europe and the US. From this elixir emerges the sound of Dan Shears and the Velveteen Orkestra.
