Gilles Peterson-approved Daudi Matsiko The Lingering Effects of Disconnection’ full EP stream
December 3 – Jam Cafe, Nottingham
Songwriter Daudi Matsiko is back to give us another dose of his dulcet tones and emotionally honest music with ‘The Lingering Effects Of Disconnection’ EP; a self-release on his own label; ok, alright.
Backed by BBC 6 Music’s Gilles Peterson as well as BBC Introducing, Daudi’s debut, ‘A Brief Introduction To Failure’ EP, also received praise from the likes of Luke Sital-Singh and Little Indie Blogs, with Right Chord Music comparing the privilege of listening to Daudi’s music to being welcomed to read a very private love-letter. He also featured on Glaswegian producer and AUS signee Escape’s track ‘Just Escape’, the Justin Martin remix of which was premiered by Mixmag and featured on XLR8R, aptly demonstrating his vocal versatility.
Inspired by a range of classic talent, the influence of Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley and even The Beach Boys can be heard throughout the EP, which opens with ‘Sandwiches’. As ever, Daudi’s beautiful hushed tones are central to the track, wrapped up in layers of soulful, folky guitar and later joined by a piano chord sequence that drips with emotion.
Closing track, ‘Take Me Old’, speaks of love transcending old age, reflected in the lyrics: “I may forget faces, names, our favourite memories, but know my heart is full”. Once again, Daudi’s soothing timbre floats above the light folk guitar of the track, creating an aura of comforting sadness, which is simultaneously open yet intimate. The lyrics are also paradoxical, combining their serious subject matter with a touch of humour. As Daudi explains, “For years I’ve been trying to write a song with a toilet reference in it. Finally I did that with…‘Take Me Old’, which is a pretty serious song. I like to do that. Combine the stupid with the serious.”
With roots in Uganda and the UK, Daudi’s love affair with music began at the tender age of 8, and began to flourish during his teenage years when he put pen to paper and began to write his own material. A crucial part of his existence, music has served as a therapeutic outlet, comforting him through the troubles life has thrown his way, and has led to the development of his sincere and heartfelt musical style. Having gigged prolifically around Nottingham to build his confidence, he is now set to support Portico in Sheffield, Manchester and London in November.
Raw, authentic and ultimately cathartic, ‘The Lingering Effects of Disconnection’ is a well-rounded and comforting EP that exemplifies Daudi’s heartwarming approach to music: one that is sure to resonate with listeners on its release.
