A severed human head has been found in a Cambridgeshire quarry.
The head was found on Monday at a Fenland quarry at Mepal, between Chatteris and Ely. Police were called at 15:00 BST.
It has not yet been established whether the remains are male or female.
“Officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit are conducting inquiries, both locally and across the county boarders,” a police spokesman said.
Police stressed that the discovery at Block Fen Drove was of a head and not a skull.
A spokesman at Mick George Ltd, which owns the quarry, said: “We are working closely with the police and providing them with all the information they need to undertake their investigations.
“At this point we cannot provide any further comments.”
