Following the release of their critically acclaimed 2014 ‘Dose’ LP, New Zealand soul electronic four-piece Sorceress prepare to play a series of special summer dates in the UK.
Formerly known as Funkommunity, the Kiwi collective’s 2011 debut album ‘Chequered Thoughts’ received international praise and led to the band touring Europe and Japan the following year. Where their previous output called to mind J Dilla-inspired future soul and R&B, ‘Dose’ saw their sound evolve, melding elements of deep electronic soul and afrobeat with the energy of dance music whilst retaining their distinctive sonic texture. Continuing to traverse the boundaries between audio intimacy and the bass driven rhythms of the dancefloor, they’re now heading to the UK to prove why they’re one of their nation’s most exciting exports.
Kicking things off on 24th June at Glastonbury’s Silver Hayes, which will also play host to the likes of Tensnake and Protoje, the band will then take in The Attic in Bristol, before returning to Glastonbury to play the progressive Shangri-La arena. Their headline show will take place at one of London’s most iconic and respected venues, the newly re-launched Jazz Café, before Sorceress travel up north to grace the stage at Manchester’s Albert’s Schloss. Further UK festival appearances will see them play Ymuno Festival in Wales and Scotland’s Kelburn Garden Party, before making their final stop at HiFi Clubin Leeds on 3rd July.
Producer Isaac Aesili and vocalist Rachel Fraser are the creative duo at the core of Sorceress, with Aesili’s production providing a diverse and sonically rich soundscape from which Fraser’s charismatic vocals weave through both light and dark lyrical themes. In a showcase of their versatility, the tour will be accompanied by a blissed-out remix of ‘Dose’ album cut ‘Teacups’ by London-based Kiwi sibling duoChaos In The CBD, which features an exotic marimba beat layered with lush electronics and rich vocal samples whilst accentuating the original’s woozy brass phrases. No strangers to collaborating, Aesili provided horns for the group’s 2015 release ‘Midnight In Peckham’, which premiered on i-D and won ‘Track of the Year’ at the Hypnotic Awards in the same year.
Already one of the most widely respected acts in their home country – nominated as finalists for ‘Best Electronica Album’ at the 2014 New Zealand Music Awards – Sorceress look set to inspire a whole new legion of fans with their fresh take on soulful electronica when they hit UK shores this summer.
