Suge Knight has run over and killed a friend while running from attackers in Los Angeles, his lawyer has said.
The Death Row Records founder also injured another man during the accident, which happened in the car park of a fast-food restaurant.
Police say a red pickup truck hit the men and then drove away.
“We are confident that once the investigation is completed, he will be totally exonerated,” lawyer James Blatt said by telephone.
Knight, 49, planned to turn himself in to authorities, he said.
“Looks like he drove backwards and struck the victims and drove forwards and struck them again,” said Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt John Corina.
“The people we talked to say it looked like it was an intentional act.”
Mr Blatt says it was an accident.
“He was in the process of being physically assaulted by two men and in an effort to escape he unfortunately hit two [other] individuals,” he said.
“He was in his car trying to escape.”
A 55-year-old man died at a hospital and a 51-year-old man was injured but Corina did not have any more information about his condition.
Corina said police had not found any witnesses who said Knight was driving the vehicle but the rap mogul was seen driving a red pickup truck 20 minutes earlier in a different part of town where a video was being shot.
The empty truck was found on Thursday night in a West Los Angeles car park.
Marion “Suge” Knight is said to have got into a row on set before driving to the fast-food car park.
Witnesses at the restaurant said another argument occurred before the accident.
Mr Blatt said he had not yet spoken to Knight but that he planned to negotiate to surrender but there is no word yet on when that will happen.
Knight founded Death Row Records in the 1990s but later declared bankruptcy and the company was auctioned off.
Last August he was shot six times at a nightclub in Los Angeles. No arrests have been made.
