5. al-Nusra Front
The group announced its creation on January 23, 2012, during the Syrian Civil War. Since then, it has been described as "the most aggressive and successful", or "one of the most effective rebel forces" in Syria. Its goal is to overthrow Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria, create a Pan-Islamic state under Sharia, and a caliphate. They regularly coordinate suicide bombings and have also conducted mass executions.
4. The Taliban
We have all heard of them of course. Afghanistan is still a huge mess. 80% of civilian casualties were a direct result of Taliban activity as recently as 2012. They are still extremely powerful because they are generating close $500 million a year from expansive drug trade, human trafficking and extortion among other criminal activities.
3. Boko Haram
This militant Islamist movement based in northeast Nigeria has been in the news more and more lately. In June they kidnapped 200 young school girls, most of whom have not been found to this day! Along with IS, they are the up and coming guys and their killing better be put to a stop soon! We expect them to flourish though with all the attention being focused on IS.

Bin Laden might have been killed but the organization is as powerful as ever. The new commander 'Ayman al-Zawahiri', has a $25 million bounty on his head for a reason of course! They too want to enforce radical Islam, or sharia, through terrorism. The attacks on 9/11, performed by them, instigated the war on terror. Al Qaeda is another group that we better not forget about while battling IS!

Formerly known as ISIS, IS is a terrorist organization that is trying to take over Iraq and Syria (for starters). They are absolutely merciless and even al-Nusra and Al Qaeda have distanced themselves from some of their actions. IS is worth an estimated $2 billion(!), much of which is coming from oil, looted weapons and bank robberies.
